I love the Internet, but getting book catalogues in the mail never gets old!

Simone de Beauvoir was born on 9 January 1908:

“Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can’t build on it; it’s only good for wallowing in.”-Katherine Mansfield (died on 9 January 1923)
Even though I’m a writer, I’m horrible at keeping a journal. I want to go back and edit my work, which defeats the purpose of keeping a diary. It doesn’t take long for my perfectionism to turn into frustration. I’m sure you can guess what always happens next.
This one line a day journal is perfect for me, though. It’s practical, low-pressure, and pretty. I call that a win!

“It takes a heap of loafing to write a book.”-Gertrude Stein
After three years of “loafing” (researching, living, philosophizing, and planning things in my head), I started writing my first book today.
Wish me luck!
Here’s to a creative 2017 for us all.
I read 82 books in 2016, but fell 28 short of my (rather ambitious) goal of 110. My year was way too busy to read as much as I would have liked. I finished the majority of the books during the first half of the year, as life obligations slowed my pace after summer. On the bright side, 2017 will get off to a good start reading-wise, as I am close to finishing half a dozen books.
Here’s a list of every book that I finished in 2016, with some very loose ratings.
KEY:
*=Read as research for my novella
**=This designation means that I liked the book in spite of myself, but as such find it too hard to assign a fair grade
1=You are my enemy
2=We’ll stay acquaintances, thanks
3=I like you, but I don’t like you like you
4=You are my friend, but not my best friend
5=You are my love match, but don’t expect fidelity Continue reading
I always shop for books and calendars between Christmas and New Year’s Day. As usual, I ended up with quite the eclectic mix (although the combination makes sense in my head). Do you like to buy books this time of year?

Books! Calendars! Comics!
I would be totally negligent if I didn’t acknowledge the death of author Richard Adams. He died on Christmas Eve at the age of 96.

“Art never responds to the wish to make it democratic; it is not for everybody; it is only for those who are willing to undergo the effort needed to understand it.”-Flannery O’Connor
What is on your reading list, as the days become darker and shorter? Do your habits change as the weather turns cold? I’ve been way too busy this month to do much reading, and I’m not going to be able to slow down between now and the new year.
Since 1st December, I’ve finished:

Eugene V. Debs, 1897
