Check Out My Contribution to the Classic Movie History Project 2016!

I wrote an article about the wonderful German actress Ossi Oswalda and her Ernst Lubitsch-directed charmer, I Don’t Want to Be a Man (1918), for the Classic Movie History Project 2016.

What Are You Reading in July?

Do you believe in the concept of beach reads? I don’t. Not for me, anyway! My habits are fairly solid year-round.

Things are finally back on-track for me; I had a couple of really light reading months. It feels good to return to normal.

Since 1st July, I’ve finished:

  • Women in the Middle Ages: The lives of real women in a vibrant age of transition by Frances and Joseph Gies

I’m almost done with:

  • Intellectuals: From Marx and Tolstoy to Sartre and Chomsky by Paul Johnson
  • Own It!: Be the Boss of Your Life–at Home and in the Workplace by Tabatha Coffey
  • The Who, the What, and the When: 65 Artists Illustrate the Secret Sidekicks of History by Jenny Volvovski, Julia Rothman, and Matt Lamothe

To Be Read by 31st July:

  • Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley by Jeffrey Spivak
  • Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington
  • The Ultimate Illustrated beats Chronology by Robert Niemi
  • HAVOC in its third year by Ronan Bennett
  • Movie Icons: Welles by TASCHEN

Which book on your list do you most look forward to reading?

Please share with me in the comments.

Happy reading!

The Reel Infatuation Blogathon: An Origin Story

The Reel Infatuation Blogathon is finally here! My actual entry won’t be posted for a day or two, but this piece delves into how the blogathon came into existence.

I’m kind of obsessed with Christmas films. For many people, Thanksgiving marks the start of the decorating or shopping season. I, on the other hand, take it as the sign to begin watching as many holiday flicks as possible. I’d do it around the clock if I could. My husband thinks this is really strange, but he leaves me to it with nary a head shake. He’s a good man.

Sometime in mid-December of last year, after watching both White Christmas (1954) and Miracle on 34th Street (1947) a few too many times, I had a mild personal epiphany.

I realized that my two biggest film character crushes are on these guys:

John Payne as Fred GaileyJohn Payne as Fred Gailey

Dean Jagger as Major General Thomas WaverlyDean Jagger as Major General Thomas Waverly

I’ve been crushing on this holiday duo since my teen years, thus my insight was embarrassingly belated. Once I had this figured out, it was an…
