Happy Birthday, Kurt Vonnegut! You were, are, and always will be one of my very favourite writers and humans. Your time on planet Earth made the place better for all of us. You are missed, now and forever.

U.S. Army Portrait of Kurt Vonnegut, 1940s
“A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.”-Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan
What a great quote. I’ve never read his work but I think I will. Thanks Maedez.

Yay! I love to get people to try new-to-them writers. Vonnegut wrote so much; I know you will find something to your taste even if you are not a sci-fi fan.

I think I’ll try Slaughterhouse Five. That seems up my alley.

There’s nothing wrong with starting at the top! I have a soft spot for his political essays and for the novels Jailbird and Cat’s Cradle. Oh, and his short stories… Not to mention his artwork!

Well, now I’ll have to check out his art, too. I always liked his name but never looked into his work. 🙂

His art is somehow exactly what one would expect from Kurt Vonnegut. Of course, I know that this means nothing to you now, but it will after you have read either some of his work or learned something about his life and personality. The art just makes sense. 🙂

Mini Rant: I once worked with a guy who TOTALLY COPIED Kurt Vonnegut’s writing style, and I mean COMPLETELY ripped it off. He wrote emails in this style, business correspondence, memos, etc. Ridiculous! And passing it off as his own style, when it was blatantly Vonnegut. Everyone thought this co-worker was so original and clever. And the thing is, he wasn’t even a very good rip-off artist.
Whew! Glad to get that off my chest.

I am not going to mince words here: that is really shitty. I have no other words. That is it-just really shitty. Oh-except to say how difficult it must have been to have to deal with that rip-off (non) artist.

Yes, it was a frustrating time. It turned out, unsurprisingly, that Kurt Vonnegut wasn’t the only person he was ripping off…

Why am I not surprised? It seems like he kind of made a hobby of that behaviour…
