I never understood why his novels were considered so great, though. His female characters always ring hollow to me, but I guess the Nick Adams stories appeal to that part of me growing up who wished I was a boy 🙂
He is incredibly problematic from a feminist standpoint, and personality-wise I find him pretty revolting. Excessive braggadocio rubs me the wrong way. I think the reason his novels are still considered great has very little to do with content or characterization, and everything to do with his beautiful concision of language.
I guess for me, if a writer doesn’t let me get close to characters I quickly get bored of impressive language skills. For some reason as a teenager Hemingway’s Nick Adams struck a chord, but everything else was sort of blah and miserable to me.
I have never been a big Hemingway fan, but as a writer I appreciate his economy of language. It is not so much that his language is impressive, but rather how much he did with the words he chose (if that makes sense).
Yes, I think it’s why I like his short stories. The spare quality of them appeals to me sometimes. Other times I like big, over the top language. depends on the mood.
Thank you! I will accept this as an un-birthday present.

I don’t care if he wasn’t a feminist–he’s still very handsome. And The Nick Adams stories are some of my favorite stories ever.

I do not care for him personally, but some of his writing is terrific. Plus, handsome is handsome.
