This is how I discovered Carson McCullers: Several years ago, on a very cold winter day, I went into a bookstore and asked the staff member to recommend a book set in the deep South. She said, “I have just the thing,” and handed me a copy of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I think I read it in one sitting.
