I’m with you about the film. I mean, I love the cast. It was a highly, highly successful adaptation. However…
The film Pal Joey is not the same as the stories/book Pal Joey or the Broadway Pal Joey. PJ was a true anti-hero. It did not have a happy ending. In my opinion, it was adapted way too late for film (the Broadway production debuted in 1940, the film was released in 1957). In the Broadway musical, he was a charming cad and a dancer/singer. Sound familiar? Kind of sounds like the type of character Gene Kelly later played to perfection in many screen musicals. Oh, that’s right. Gene originated the role of Pal Joey on Broadway. To me, this is one of the great “what-ifs” of film history. What-if Gene had been able to play the role in a film in the early 1940s? How fabulous that could have been!
Have you read Pal Joey? I cannot bring myself to like the film (despite the fabulous cast), but maybe the book is a zillion times better??
