Andre de Dienes took some of the best (and earliest) photos of Marilyn. This one is from a bit later in their collaboration, 1949.

I love Marilyn, but while I loved Helen as a child, my feelings for her now are more complex.

I’ve never had a passion for Helen, but when I was a child I enjoyed her memoir very much. I think that having complex feelings for a famous person-someone we cannot possibly ever really know-is a sign of maturity. There are very few noted people I love without some sort of reservation or at least a deeper understanding of their humanity.

In my mind I’m mature–but my kids don’t think so.
