  1. I’m surprised by how easy it is to recognize so many of them. I know most them are no longer living, but I almost felt sorry for them. Who would want their awkward teenage pictures spread around on the Internet?!

    • Somehow, I doubt that most of these people would mind all that much. It just adds to their individual mythologies. The average person would probably not be too happy, but then we are talking about people who very much want(ed) to be remembered.

      • That’s a good point, though I doubt J.D. Salinger is in that group. Some of those authors were known for wanting their privacy.

      • It’s funny, because of course I assumed that everyone would automatically consider Salinger to be the exception. Many artists and writers are quite desirous of privacy whilst alive, but deliberately leave the way open for the cult of personality after death.

      • So little has been released since Salinger’s death (and some works won’t be published for decades after his death, as he wished) that I suspect he wanted his privacy.

  2. I don’t know why, but I am obsessed with this sort of thing. I love that Flannery O’Connor said her hobby is collecting rejection slips.
