[News]-Poet Adrienne Rich is Dead

Award-winning poet Adrienne Rich is dead. She was 82.  More information can be found on The Rumpus or at the Los Angeles Times. I’d write more but I’m eager to curl up with some of her poems and a cup of tea. There is no better way to honor a writer’s memory than by reading their carefully crafted words.

[News] Spring Fling Podcast

Now that we are on the edge of Spring, I expect every day to be as wonderful as yesterday was: balmy and lovely and energizing. When I kicked open the door at work at 12:40 and skipped out onto the sidewalk (yes, this really happened), it almost felt as if I was playing hooky from my pesky work-a-day obligations. Instead, I simply transitioned from one self to another, from something practical to something vital and necessary.

I spent a couple of happy, creative and stimulating hours in the company of a dozen talented women (and my husband!), as we recorded a Spring-themed podcast for Women Writing for (a) Change. Regular readers of this blog will recognize my piece as one that originally posted here, ‘Intermezzo: The Sky is Flaunting Itself‘. The podcast will be available later this month. It is a must-hear for anyone eager to push away the cobwebs of the dying dark season. You will be inspired by words of regeneration, beauty and clarity. I will update you with the particulars as they become available.

[News] Growing Pains

You may have noticed that we’ve recently been sticking to just the basics-Project 366, Voices from the Grave, etc. There’s nothing to fear, really! We are working on some snazzy, more comprehensive additions to the blog. You’ll start seeing new things as early as next week. We have grand plans for the month of March and the dawning of Spring. We cannot wait to share them with you. We know your time is precious; thank you for letting us share our small press passion with you.

[News] KMS is Back

My long-time friend, occasional collaborator and creative co-worker KM Scott has officially joined me here at the new WordPress home of ‘A Small Press Life’. I’m seriously thrilled to have him back on board as we propel the site to even greater success in 2012. He is one of the best purveyors of intelligent, in-depth, humorous and original pop culture analysis on the planet. He’s also a talented comics artist and fiction writer. He will be contributing both a regular column (his debut entry is here) and one-off pieces.

[News] School Libraries Petition

I could easily devote thousands of words to the subject of reading. It has played a significant role in my life. I don’t remember a time without books, as my earliest memories involve me toting around my little trove of golden-spined treasures, plopping down in the middle of the floor and trying so hard to unlock their mysteries. I was approximately 18-months old. I spent a lot of time at libraries. Going to the public library was a huge treat, better than dolls or Hot Wheel cars or ice cream sundaes. When I started kindergarten, I became doubly lucky: schools have libraries, too! I was, as it turns out, even luckier than I suspected: my family read to me whenever I asked, took me to check out books whenever I begged and, just as importantly, I went to a good school with a properly funded library of its own.

Personal circumstances aside, the latter is not a luxury; it’s a much-needed and highly important necessity that should be available to every child. Reading changes lives. It’s one of the most important paving stones on the road to success that begins, for most of us, at our local school library. As of this moment, 17,645 signatures are still needed. If you’d like to sign the petition, go here. A special thanks to Cassie at ‘Books and Bowel Movementsfor the FYI.

More to Love

I am thrilled, pleased and proud to announce that ASPL is adding another regular writer to its roster, KM Scott. He is a man of many talents and counts the following among his titles: artist, editor, writer, and publisher. Mr. Scott will bring an entirely different tone and perspective to this space, showing that there are as many takes on the small press life as there are artists to live them. Please check back shortly to read his first piece.
