    I like Mr Orwell, but I’m not sure I agree with that. I’m thinking of some very clever speeches that weren’t written in sincerity, but use language with great clarity and power. Sometimes words are easier to arrange when they’re just words – it’s a bit like cleaning somebody else’s house – it’s always easier because you don’t pick things up and read them or think about them, or get involved with them; it’s a sterile, simple act of making order out of mess.

    • I agree with Orwell when it comes to fiction, personal essays, etc. I think that political speeches are a huge exception. They don’t require sincerity, so much as the appearance of sincerity (which is an entirely different animal, of course).
