I “liked” this not because (horrors) Heaney is dead but to celebrate his life and accomplishment. His translation of the Old English epic BEOWULF ( the oldest epic in our written language) was masterful in so many ways, not the least of which was as a direct result of bringing to modern readers the soaring poetic resonance of the original which only a great poet in his own right could bring to the task. Great post, Book Nerd, bravo

Understood! I give anyone who “likes” this post the benefit of the doubt. 🙂
Beowulf has been one of my favourites since I first read it in AP high school English class. I have read it many times since, including Heaney’s translation (which I agree is magnificent).
