I could almost say this is a symbolic type of illustration – what is he showing her that she is so shy about? Notice the plate behind her head that looks like a halo?
Whatever he is showing her, she is not quite sure she should be looking. When this illustration was done I think it was the Romantic period and women were either angels or fallen angels.
Very interesting take, Judy. I like it. You always bring a different perspective to things-you are such a great reader. I appreciate your engagement here.
I wouldn’t be as engaged if your blog weren’t engaging! I think I the perspective comes from being an art history fan and having had at one time a wonderful professor of art history.
Thanks! I actually wanted to major in art history, but got distracted by theatre when I was a teenager. Then I went back to writing. I worked in galleries for years, though, so I have had the best of all three worlds.

I will have to look at the illustration with fresh eyes and get back to you. Very astute observation.

Or, an interesting and not always formal one. The best kind, in my opinion. You are obviously no slouch either, Judy.
