    • Yes-ish. I think that she was a very interesting person whose screen presence is second to none. I like her best opposite John Gilbert. After that, things are hit or miss for me. Her presence is very aesthetic and studied. Sometimes she is very, very moving. Overall, I appreciate her art without finding her work realistically human. She was art more than life, but there is a place for that in cinema. Film history without her in it would be unthinkable. As a private citizen, I respect her peculiar nature.

      • Thank YOU for asking me that question. Thinking about a response really helped me properly form my thoughts. Really, now that I think about it, even in her steamiest love scenes opposite John Gilbert (and they are still really steamy) she is not-quite-real, you know? Not in a bad way. She was, and is, an otherworldly creature existing slightly apart from reality. I think there is a place for that in film. Escapism is nice sometimes.
