A local used bookstore recently closed after 25 years. They had a fantastic going-out-of-business sale. While part of me feels “guilty” for taking advantage of their sad circumstances, the rest (and logical) part of me knows that they needed to sell as many books as possible. Through these books, a bit of their entrepreneurial and intellectual spirit will live on. With that idea in mind, I’m doing a limited-run series where I’ll spotlight each of the volumes I “adopted” from this sweet little shop. Shine on, you bookish gems!

WHY I BOUGHT IT:
I collect books based on 1950s and 1960s television shows. All of the others that I own are lightly illustrated novelizations, so I could not resist this special “annual” edition of Dr. Kildare. It consists of three comic book stories. Plus, Dr. Kildare looks pretty dreamy on the cover…and throughout the whole thing. This book is just so much fun!

Fortunately for me, this wasn’t my neighborhood bookstore. It was 3 or 4 neighborhoods away, but it is certainly a huge loss for them! And, yes, Richard Chamberlain was definitely the guy.

Aren’t used books the best? Sometimes you find the most interesting things inside them, e.g. inscriptions, notes, underlining, etc. Once I bought a used book that I thought had no markings in it, but much later in the book, the author made a statement that I thought was a little incredulous. Turns out I wasn’t the only skeptical reader; a previous owner underlined the sentence and wrote, “!!!!!” in the margin.
Notes like this are kind of a secret code from reader to reader, no?

Yes, yes they are! I love markings/ephemera in books. And I love that someone immortalized their skepticism. That’s fantastic!
They really are a secret code, that’s a wonderful way of phrasing it. And often a secret code across the generations…
