Rex Beach
Rex Beach wrote many popular novels and plays, including the spectacularly successful The Spoilers (1906). This work alone has been adapted for film five times. He also won a silver medal at the 1904 Olympics. Event: Men’s (Team Competition) Water Polo. He committed suicide in 1949.
A talented novelist and an Olympian–that’s an impressive combination! And he has a bit of an Elvis pout going on. It’s terribly sad that even with all his accomplishments he was tormented by inner demons. Mental illness is a cruel disease.

Indeed! Although, he killed himself because he was distraught about his long-time wife’s death. 😦

Hahaha! He was actually a well-educated young man who went to law school. 🙂 Of course, his post-schooling, pre-fame life was really interesting. He was a gold prospector in Alaska during the big Klondike Gold rush and then he won an Olympic medal.
