Oh, Autumn!

Oh, autumn! You are my favourite season. No, really. I adore everything about you: your beautiful leaves, smoke-scented wind, vibrant sunsets, pumpkin patches, delectable food (warm cider, caramel apples, pie). You are really quite remarkable.

You have the best pastimes: hayrides, haunted houses, apple picking.

No wonder your charms drive poets into the arms of hyperbole:

you are the season of purest inspiration.

Your sights, sounds, smells–all are bundled away until needed. I unpack them in the heart of winter, when I do my best writing. They make life, and work, less barren. Hopeful, warm.

  1. Of all the seasons, autumn is the only season I miss here in Tucson. I love the paintings you chose – reminds me of some of the Group of Seven from the same era. It seems artists can be very bold with autumn. My friend and I would make an outing on the best autumn day – to farm stands, antique stores, little towns and come home with our pumpkins and jams and antique linens. Then came winter….

    • Your autumn day activities sound perfect! Absolutely sublime. 🙂

There are so many gorgeous, vibrant paintings depicting autumn that it was hard to limit myself to just a few!

Autumn is the only season I could not do without. Unfortunately they seem extra short now, weather-wise.
