This is one of the strangest paintings I have ever seen. Imagine a surrealist painting in 1570. Either he was pretty ahead of his time or mad. The only other artist that comes to mind as being surrealistic of about that time was Hieronymus Bosch
Isn’t it, though? Although the nature of his sanity has been debated (more because of his work and not because there is any real indication he was mad) but I think he was just ahead of his time. The Surrealists were influenced by him, as you can imagine.
