A Year in Books/Day 204: Audrey Hepburn An Elegant Spirit

  • Title: Audrey Hepburn An Elegant Spirit
  • Author: Sean Hepburn Ferrer
  • Year Published: 2003 (Atria Books)
  • Year Purchased: 2003
  • Source: Barnes & Noble
  • About: Audrey Hepburn always seemed so decent. Not goody-goody, but all of those superlatives most of us wish we were (and only sometimes are): compassionate, patient, kind, loyal, curious, gracious, humorous, dignified and empathetic. Decency of character is not something I require of actors, writers, musicians or anyone else whose work I admire; in fact, many of the people I love-those whose talent pierces my core- are at least a bit morally scruffy. Audrey, though, is different: she is as truly beloved by those who knew her-in all of her guises- as by her fans. That rarity of seeming and being essentially the same person, from all angles, showed through in her undeniable elegance and grace of action and reputation. It showed on her face. Her eldest son, Sean Ferrer (father: Mel) wrote this quiet, bewitching, and pleasant memoir-reminiscence-tribute. Reading this beautiful coffee table volume is like flipping through a family album, where everything is rosy, bittersweet and nostalgic. It aches, but it’s a lovely ache. Loaded with photographs, memorabilia, a few recipes, artwork, and delightful text, it is a touching portrait of the humble, humorous and very human woman the author was lucky enough to call mother.
  • Motivation: I remember where I was and what I was doing when I found out Audrey Hepburn died. There are only a handful of other celebrities in this peculiar time-stopped-still memory club. Two went before and three have gone since.
  • Times Read: 3 or 4
  • Random Excerpt/Page 34: “My mother didn’t snack, but when she had a dessert, it had to be sweet. She loved a scoop of vanilla ice cream with maple syrup dribbled over it. After her afternoon nap, which she had learned to take because of the early calls and long hours of film production, she would often have a piece of chocolate-one piece! She said that chocolate chased away the blues.”

    • Agreed! Even by the early 1950s, when she became famous, genuinely “new” types were hard to come by; she was a real find for film producers and fans, because what she brought to the screen was (and remains) so unique.
