  1. “Do not tell me in mournful numbers
    Life is but an empty dream
    For the soul is dead who slumbers
    And things are not what they seem.
    Life is real! Life is earnest!
    And the grave is not its goal;
    Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
    Was not spoken of the soul.”
    I can’t believe I remember this from so many years ago….I used to read from my father’s Oxford Book of Poetry when I was a kid, and Longfellow’s work, particularly his Psalm of Life, was one of my favorites! Love this post!

    • Thanks! Although I appreciate his genius, Longfellow is not one of my preferred poets. But the book brings back childhood memories and it is a lovely edition. I’m going to flip through it again, though, as it has been years. Maybe I will feel differently now!

      • I read a little (okay, a lot) of everything, but mostly English and American poets (although Chilean Neruda is by far my fave). Even on a strict list of my preferred American poets, I am afraid that Longfellow would not rate in the top ten.
