This is probably weird, but I prefer to read poems silently to myself rather than hear the poet read them … I dunno why, really. There’s a few readers I really like … Gertrude Stein, and Dylan Thomas, of course. I like listening to prose writers, though. Kinda strange!
Great poetry is meant to be read aloud. However, I believe that poets are not always the best readers of their own work; sometimes they try too hard. I often prefer poetry when it is read by someone other than the original poet. A lot can be learned from how poets and writers choose to present themselves during readings. 🙂
